Deirdre became homeless after she was evicted from a rental property.
“I remember one day putting the kettle on to make a cup of coffee at home, and the next thing I remember is waking up in hospital after being in a diabetic coma for four days. When I came home, the landlord told me ‘you can’t live here anymore. You’re a health hazard’,” she says.
Deirdre, who had never experienced homelessness before, lived in a hostel in the city for 20 months before moving on to her own accommodation near Moyross.
“I love this place. It’s ideal for one person – one bedroom, bathroom en suite, kitchen, sitting room, you couldn’t ask for more. When I was told about this place, somebody told me it was Peter McVerry Trust. My case was put forward and I got a place,” she says.
“And the staff are constantly thinking about me. They’ll ring if I need anything. They’re great. They’re just absolutely fantastic.”
