Providing vulnerable young people with high quality education
Learning Centres

Peter McVerry Trust operates two specialist Learning Centres in Dublin.

In 2019, Peter McVerry Trust took on the management of two pre-existing Learning Centres in Dublin – PMVT Learning Centre – Carline in Lucan and PMVT Learning Centre – CMS in the south inner city.

PMVT Learning Centres work with young people who cannot access mainstream education due to a number of circumstances, for example: the need for further learning support, educational, emotional, social or behavioural challenges.

We aim to provide young people with a high-quality education program which meets the students’ individual learning needs and maximises their intrinsic abilities to engage in continuous learning.  Furthermore, we aim to enable young people to recognise the positive impact education has on their future development.

In 2023, PMVT Learning Centres worked with 63 students. These students came through our programmes via:

  • Carline Centre: 40
  • CMS Centre: 23

PMVT Learning Centres

PMVT Learning Centres are founded on an ethos of non-judgemental support, empowerment and equality. The program follows a person-centred approach with our students ensuring they experience positive educational support, respect, dignity and autonomy.

We adopt a holistic approach to learning and education with an aim to create hope and stability by providing a safe and meaningful learning environment.

The vision of PMVT Learning Centres is one where all students prosper, have access to the education system, have further personal success and can claim a genuine stake in society.

Entry requirements

Peter McVerry Trust Learning Centres accept referrals for any student aged 12 to 17 whose educational placement is at risk.

All referrals must be signed by the Educational Welfare Officer who is responsible for the school placement of the child.

Referrals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis due to limited spaces available.

Progression from PMVT Learning Centres

The overall objective of PMVT Learning Centres is to support the young person back to mainstream education, where they will continue to complete the official Leaving Certificate programme of education.

In the case that the young person and their parent(s)/guardian(s) decide that mainstream education is not the desired progression route, PMVT Learning Centres will support the young person to explore and investigate alternative areas of continued learning which is of interest to them.

We support the young person to explore and investigate further developmental opportunities such as apprenticeships and employment, should this be the desired progression route of the young person.

Upon completion of their studies at the PMVT Learning Centre, students may not have decided upon a progression route. Or, they might decide to return to further education later in life. To ensure these students are supported, all graduating 3rd year students receive a progression pack which outlines continued learning options.

A PMVT Learning Centre progression pack includes, but is not limited to:

  • Further education opportunities local to the student
  • Apprentice and employment opportunities local to the student
  • Colleges of Further Education where a Leaving Certificate is not a requirement for acceptance
  • A letter of reference

Protection for Enrolled Learners statutory guidelines:

All relevant programme and award information is made available to prospective and current learners, including the following:

  • whether or not a programme leads to an award
  • the name of the awarding body
  • the title of the award; whether the award is recognised in the National Framework
  • of Qualifications (NFQ) and if so, the award type and NFQ level
  • whether the programme is subject to procedures for access, transfer and progression and if so, what these are details of the Protection of Enrolled Learner (PEL) arrangements in place, should PEL be a requirement

The accuracy of such information is maintained. Information for prospective learners is honest, transparent and facilitates comparison.
