Peter McVerry Trust’s Aftercare Services work with Tusla Aftercare Departments to provide placements to young people as they leave children’s residential care or foster care at 18 years old and support their progression into independent living. We provide 18 residential aftercare placements across Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Louth.
An aftercare placement duration is approximately 12 months with a focus on supporting the young person to develop their life and living skills, engage in education, employment opportunities or other supports and to identify suitable accommodation progression options.
Due to the long-term housing crisis and the lack of suitable accommodation for young people over the past number of years, PMVT has worked in collaboration with Tusla and the local authorities to establish stepdown aftercare placements for young people with a visiting staff support programme. Stepdown Aftercare Services offer a safe and supported pathway to independence for young people following an Aftercare placement.
We provide 9 stepdown aftercare placements to young people in Dublin and Kildare. PMVT Aftercare teams work with Tusla Aftercare departments to support young people’s progression to independence and to avoid entering homelessness.
Each young person is supported through an individualised developmental programme underpinned by the trauma and attachment informed Well Tree model of care. Our services are designed to provide a homely setting which is trauma informed, where young people can focus on their personal development and living skills. Young people have their own rooms, personalised touches, and the reassuring presence of a care team that shows up with consistency, support and care for them.
The staff team support everything from college applications to cooking, from understanding bills to regulating emotions, the small, everyday skills that shape independence.
