Peter McVerry Trust provides safe, supportive residential care for up to 28 young people aged 12–18 across six homes in the Dublin area. We recognise the impact of the challenges that bring young people into care, our services aim to provide young people with stability at a critical time in their lives, and a place where they can feel respected, listened to and safe.
We operate a Crisis Intervention Service that provides immediate placements for young people, alongside three mainstream children’s residential services. Two of these residential services also include semi independent flats. In addition, we provide a dedicated service supporting young people in preparation for leaving care, as well as a specialised service for Separated Children Seeking International Protection.
All of these services are registered with and inspected by Tusla’s Alternative Care Inspection and Monitoring Service (ACIMS) which is part of the Quality and Regulatory Directorate within Tusla, the Child and Family Agency. Referrals are accepted directly from Tusla, and services support young people of all genders.
From the outset, our focus is on helping each young person settle in. Young people are offered a structured induction process, designed to make the transition into residential care as smooth and supportive as possible. This time is used to build trust, establish positive relationships with staff and peers, and ensure each young person understands what to expect from the service, and what the service expects of them.
Each young person is supported through an individualised developmental programme underpinned by the trauma and attachment informed Well Tree model of care. The focus is on meeting young people’s needs. Our approach is practical, consistent and affirming, with a strong focus on promoting each young person’s wellbeing, self-care, education, and everyday life and living skills. The ultimate goal is to support young people to build on their strengths, grow in confidence and independence, and to prepare them for adulthood at a pace that feels right for them.
At every stage, our work is rooted in the belief that every young person deserves the opportunities and support to meet their full potential.
