Shane

Shane’s journey from the depths of addiction and homelessness to a life of service and independence is a testament to Shane’s own resilience and the power of community support. His struggles began early, “I started substance abuse at a very young age and then it just progressed. The drugs got heavier and the friends got more difficult.”

Shane’s family, after offering numerous chances, finally had to set boundaries, urging him to take responsibility. This turning point came when Shane admitted he needed help. With determination and support from Peter McVerry Trust, Shane began to rebuild his life. His efforts paid off when he graduated from Coolmine Lodge’s rehabilitation program and entered a reintegration phase.

“Coming from not having a key to your own house and no one wanting you, to putting in the work and then getting a key to your own home, having that feeling that everyone wants to support you, it’s priceless. Do you know what I mean? I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy.”

Shane enrolled in a Level 5 Addiction Studies program and participated in a Boxing initiative, which keeps him engaged and focused on his goals. Shane’s story underscores how, with the right help and a willingness to change, anyone can turn their life around and aspire to help others do the same.
