Peter McVerry Trust is Ireland’s leading advocate for action on empty homes, derelict sites and underused spaces.

We strongly believe that addressing these issues can play a significant role in improving housing availability, housing affordability, and reducing and ultimately eliminating homelessness.

At Peter McVerry Trust we advocate and campaign on these issues and demonstrate how empty homes can be reused to provide high quality social housing.

Peter McVerry Trust organised Ireland’s first empty homes conference in 2017, hired Ireland’s first full time empty homes officer and has had more empty homes projects than any other Approved Housing Body in Ireland. We have secured numerous advocacy goals on this issue and continue to work with the Dept of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to progress this issue.

Our goal is to ensure the creation of a sustainable, systematic method of preventing and tackling empty homes and derelict sites.

Empty Homes Initiatives

There are a range of initiatives that allows Peter McVerry Trust to secure the reuse of empty buildings for the purpose of providing social housing to people currently experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

As part of these initiatives, Peter McVerry Trust would like to speak to the owners of vacant properties who would be interested in selling or leasing their properties to us.

Peter McVerry Trust is attempting to secure properties under the Repair and Leasing Scheme and Buy and Renew Scheme as part of Rebuilding Ireland. However, we are equally happy to speak to owners about securing their properties through Long Term Social Leasing.

Repair and Lease

• Up to €60,000 interest-free loan towards the cost of repairs
• Contracts and paperwork managed by Peter McVerry Trust
• Guaranteed rental income for entire lease period
• Property maintained by Peter McVerry Trust
• Management of tenancy undertaken by Peter McVerry Trust

Buy and Renew

Peter McVerry Trust is interested in purchasing empty properties under the Buy and Renew Scheme as part of Rebuilding Ireland. Under the Buy and Renew Scheme properties are acquired at market rates and funds are made available to approved housing bodies (AHBs) to repair and return to use.

What properties are Peter McVerry Trust interested in?

• Residential properties (apartments; detached, semi-detached and terraced houses)
• Commercial properties with the potential to be converted into residential use
• All properties must be vacant for a minimum of 12 months.

The Peter McVerry Trust acquiring properties in all Local Authorities across the country with the exception of Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim.
