When a young person leaves State care and is supported into one of our CAS for Care aftercare units, they arrive at their new home with limited income, few personal belongings, and find themselves living independently for the first time.
Helping us kit out one of our aftercare apartments will ease the financial burden of settling into a new home and ensure the young person moving in will have essential items like clean linen and towels, food, household appliances and items which support their engagement in education.
Young people ageing out of State care are one of the groups most at risk of experiencing homelessness. In 2017, our founder Fr Peter McVerry and CEO Pat Doyle proposed and successfully lobbied the the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to develop a specific Capital Assistance Scheme for young people exiting State care.
Today, we provide aftercare housing and support to young people ageing out of State care in nine counties across Ireland.
