In this podcast, we speak to Dr Sam Tsemberis, the founder of Housing First about why the model is so effective at tackling long-term homelessness. We also hear from Barry and Christopher who are both Housing First tenants with Peter McVerry Trust in Dublin, who tell us about the positive impact that Housing First has had on their lives.
Housing First is a participant-centred approach that provides a person, who’s sleeping rough, or experiencing long-term homeless, with their own secure accommodation, as well as access to tailored and specialised intensive supports.
Peter McVerry Trust currently delivers the Housing First Dublin project on behalf of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, with a target of achieving over 600 Housing First tenancies across the four Dublin local authority areas between June 2019 – 2022. Peter McVerry Trust is Ireland’s largest provider of Housing First services and, as an early adopter, has been working on the model since 2011.
