Minding your mental health this Christmas

Christmas can be a difficult for many people. For those impacted by homelessness, Christmas is a particularly tough time.

Families and individuals can be overwhelmed by the expense of Christmas, while others are struggling with separation or estrangement from their partners, children or extended family. It can also be hard for those dealing with addiction and mental health issues.

At Peter McVerry Trust, we do our very best to support those in our services. Members of the public support us through kind and generous donations, which are very much appreciated.

Mental health services can also offer support during Christmas, and indeed any time of year. Below are details for organisations you can get in touch with.

Helpline Services

If you need help please contact one of the free confidential helpline services. Most helplines will provide a listening service, give information and advice, provide emotional support and point you in the direction of other services. They are staffed by trained volunteers or employees.

In addition to the services outlined below, a full list of national mental health services is available at yourmentalhealth.ie.

  • Samaritans – freephone 116 123 – open 24/7, or email jo@samaritans.org.
  • Pieta House – freephone 1800 247 247 – open 24/7, email mary@pieta.ie, or text HELP to 51444 (suicide prevention, self-harm, bereavement).

There are also some organisations which offer counselling for free or discounted prices.

  • Dublin Counselling Centre – reduced rate is negotiated in accordance with the person’s means, and in exceptional cases there may be no fee.
  • Coiscéim Counselling Programme (Cork, Kerry, Limerick) – based on people’s ability to pay.
  • Shine (Dublin, Cork, Waterford) – the service is free and individuals can access counselling through self-referral by phone or email. Shine offers a confidential email support service for anyone who doesn’t feel ready or able to speak to someone in person or on the phone
